The Family Violence Center is the only shelter for battered women and children in Mobile, Alabama, although services currently span across Mobile and Washington counties in Alabama.
Services offered by Penelope House include advocacy, community education, counseling, on-site medical care, schools prevention education, transitional living, and victims' support groups In addition to its services, a 24-hour crisis line (251) 342-8994 was established by Penelope House to provide prompt counseling, information and referral services to individuals in abusive and/or violent situations.
SIDS Advanced Earn While You Learn
On September 29 clients from Mobile & Saraland came out to the Saraland Chamber of Commerce to learn about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and how to lessen their risk factors.
Class was led by Veronica Hudson, Nurse Manager at USA Women's & Children's Hospital.
SIDS is the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history. (Willinger et al, 1991).
In a typical situation parents check on their supposedly sleeping infant to find him or her dead. This is the worst tragedy parents can face, a tragedy which leaves them with a sadness and a feeling of vulnerability that lasts throughout their lives. Since medicine can not tell them why their baby died, they blame themselves and often other innocent people. Their lives and those around them are changed forever.
